Welcome to the website of Lassiter Junior Cross Country and Track.

The club is for boys and girls from school grades K-8 who are interested in distance running for either cross country or track.  There are two seasons, Cross Country in the Fall and Track in the Spring.  The purpose of the club is to introduce children of all abilities to distance running in an atmosphere that is fun, competitive, and one that will teach them about running sports.  The program is sponsored by Lassiter High School, but you do not need to be a future Lassiter student to participate in the program.  Note that for the K-4th graders on the team it cannot be a drop-off activity.

The coaches hope that they will provide an environment that you and your child will find rewarding. It is very important that each parent become involved in the club, at practices and competitive meets.  In this way we believe that we will develop a very successful club for your child.

We are a USA Track & Field sanctioned youth club.  Cross-country youth meet distances are 2K (1.2 miles), 3K (1.9 miles), 2 miles, or 4K (2.5 miles) depending on type of the meet and age groups.  For track our focus is on the distance events of 400M, 800M, 1500M and 3000M but many runners also try out the sprints (100, 200) and field events (long jump, softball throw, mini-javelin throw) as well.  We teach relay handoffs and block starts as well.  If you intend to focus on sprints (100M, 200M) or field events we recommend you check into The Heat or Walton Youth track clubs nearby as they have coaches that specialize in those events.

We also enter local 5K charity races to show a fun and positive side of the lifelong sport or running.

The club formed in the fall of 2008 for the cross country season.  We average between 55 to 70 athletes.  We hold three to four practices a week and participate in about 6 meets finishing the season by participating in the Georgia State USATF Junior Olympic meet.  In 2009 our Youth Boys team won the USATF Junior Olympic Georgia State Championship.  In 2010 our boys won the runner's up trophy at the Cobb County Middle School Championship and we had several girls and boys qualify for regionals including a National Championship qualifier.  In 2011 we had 20 regional qualifiers and 3 qualify for CC Nationals.

We practice primarily on trails and fields of McCleskey Middle School.  We may also go to East Cobb Park, Lassiter HS track/Harrison Park, Leita Thompson Park, Roswell Area Park.

We are a Cross Country team that does track & field for fun and conditioning.  Both our CC and track practices are similar in structure with an assortment of distance, speed, interval, tempo and VO2max running workouts with some fun activities thrown in as well.

Please encourage your young athletes to run 20 minutes 2-3 times per week until the first practice.  This will help to get everyone off to a good start and reduce injuries as we ramp up our training.  Don't forget to static stretch only after running not before running.

Always bring a water bottle and a good pair of running shoes to practice.  Big Peach Running Company on Johnson Ferry Road offers 10% discount to our team.

Our goal is to introduce K-8th graders to running sports and serve as preparation for high school.  For K-4th graders on the team it cannot be a drop-off activity for these younger athletes.

We are a 100 % Volunteer Club and need your support.  There are many opportunities that you can choose from such as coaching, practice chaperon, meet helper, club officer, snack/drink coordinator, clothing/uniform assistant, webmaster, and photographer.  No experience is necessary.
